Opening the door to transportation fuels other than gasoline or diesel means considering not just electricity, but other fuels, like natural gas. I personally want to see electric vehicles because that’s the best long-term solution. However there’s an aspect to this where the companies that supply other energy sources, like electricity or natural gas, see an opportunity to push their fuel to new customers. The electricity companies want to get into the game of providing transportation fuel, and perhaps the natural gas companies want to do the same.
I just received an inquiry from a PR person that’s right in this line of thinking:
From October 3-18, Russian natural gas company Gazprom, Germany natural gas company E.ON and their many local supporters will join together to support the seventh Blue Corridor Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) Rally.The rally will feature NGVs driving across Europe in an effort to educate the public on the benefits of natural gas as a transportation fuel. With stops in 17 cities, Gazprom will demonstrate why natural gas is clean, safe and affordable. Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo are just a few Blue Corridor supporters who will be joining us along the way!
Gazprom – being a huge natural gas company – are they promoting natural gas as a transportation fuel for altruistic environmental reasons? No. It’s business. If they can get people using natural gas transportation it increases their sales.
The Blue Corridor Rally is all about Gazprom promoting a new angle of business for themselves, right?
Well, I suppose it’s fair to repeat their statement about natural gas as a transportation fuel
Blue Corridor promotes natural gas as a transportation fuel because it has many advantages for consumers, governments and corporate fleet owners:Natural gas is clean: Driving NGVs benefits the environment because natural gas-powered engines emit 25% less carbon dioxide compared to petrol, produce 95% less nitrogen oxide, generate almost no particular matter and do not produce any soot at all.
Natural gas is affordable: Natural gas is the cheapest fuel currently on the market. It allows drivers to save about 30% of fuel costs compared to diesel and about 50% compared to petrol. In the current economic climate, this kind of savings can have a monumental impact.
Natural gas is safe: Natural gas is proven to be the safest transportation fuel worldwide. Natural gas requires very little processing and is less flammable than other transportation fuels.
Natural Gas is abundant: According to the International Gas Union, current natural gas reserves will last for at least another 250 years, dependably providing us with transportation fuel for years to come.
