Medium-voltage Intelligent Universal Transformer based DC fast charging development and demonstration – EPRI
EPRI has recently demonstrated a proof-of-concept, medium voltage, Intelligent Universal Transformer (IUTTM) with fast charging capability in the latest prototype design. As this overview explains, EPRI believes that a medium voltage fast charging system could result in a significant opportunity for solid state transformers where the power electronics are incorporated into the transformer design.

Use of the Intelligent Universal Transformer in electric vehicle charging
The Universal Transformer as EV Fast Charger – February 21, 2012 – http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/the-universal-transformer-as-ev-fast-charger
power conversion efficiencies of about 96 percent to 97 percent, compared to the 89 percent to 91 percent achieved by today’s fast chargers combined with the three-phase supply transformers they need to draw power from the grid
EPRI’s AC-to-DC-to-AC IUTs could also replace building transformers to better manage power quality, reactive power and other functions, all while also serving as a hub for fast car charging
built to connect relatively simply to medium-voltage distribution lines, compared to the multiple transformers needed to convert that power to voltages suitable to DC fast charging.. That means EPRI’s system is about one-fifth the size of the alternative, multiple-transformer setup..

A multilevel converter-based, intelligent, universal transformer includes back-to-back, interconnected, multi-level converters coupled to a switched inverter circuit via a high-frequency transformer. The input of the universal transformer can be coupled to a high-voltage distribution system and the output of the universal transformer can be coupled to low-voltage applications. The universal transformer is smaller in size than conventional copper-and-iron based transformers, yet provides enhanced power quality performance and increased functionality.
